How is trust built in us?
Who
develops the concept of trust?
By
what type of reinforcement?
We
are often asked to trust people like first responders, like the government,
like our physicians, like our teachers, like our parents, like our friends,
like our employers, like our internet resources, like the various software folks
whose apps we download and use, like things which are utterly consistent such
as time, seasons, aging. In each of the foregoing, though our trust is solicited
by any and all of them, we respond in trust dependent on the ‘who’ and the ‘why’.
Notice who is missing from the list and is likely the ONE most important to
trust and yet, do we? GOD! And all things associated with HIM such as HIS SON,
his Holy Spirit, HIS Word, the Bible, HIS promises and prophecies. Additionally,
a key component of trust in GOD is faith because not all things we believe are
tangible.
Who
should we truly trust? Is it our parents? Is it our spouse? Is it a friend not
related to us? Is it some leader in your world? Is it GOD? You are the only one
who can honestly answer the question. But, this article will seek to establish
the notion of trust in GOD -- and if you do already trust in GOD -- to sustain
and perhaps fortify your trust. First, let’s look at Biblical
"Trust". We find the following scriptures in Psalm 91: “I will say of
the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
– Psa 91:2 and “He shall cover thee with
his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall
be thy shield and buckler.” – Psa 91:4
What
is the concept for ‘trust’ in Psalm 91? In verse 2 it is straightforward.
Primarily it means to ‘trust in’. So, GOD is asking us to TRUST IN HIM! That is
easy for most Christians. They haves seen sufficient and irrefutable evidence
to trust GOD absolutely. But, for newer Christians, or for those who are not
Christian but are battling with whether or not there is a GOD and if so, with
so many to choose from, they may posit, which is the ‘right’ one? For those who
trust in GOD they daily exercise their faith to this end. Here is the Biblical
definition of faith: ““Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the
evidence of things not seen.” – Heb 11:1 ---
Remember,
this statement:’ That is easy for most Christians. They haves seen sufficient and
irrefutable evidence to trust GOD absolutely’ so how is faith deployed
if there is evidence? It is the trust we have because what had been unsubstantiated
in our minds when we first began our Christian walk, or maybe merely entertained
the notion of GOD was substantiated and became our foundation. Thereafter, anytime HE asks us to
trust HIM about things we have not seen, for which there is scant to no
evidence, we will accept in faith because we know if GOD spoke/speaks it that
which has been spoken will in fact happen. When we break it down isn’t that how
we build trust in anyone? Some people decide to trust without question
reserving the right to revoke trust with provocation. Others, mostly folks who
have lived awhile trust only after they have verified the veracity of the
requestor of our trust. Even then, that trust can be broken and perhaps
permanently. Those who absolutely trust GOD have full faith in HIS promises.
The
next time we see ‘trust’ in Psalm 91 is in verse 4:” He shall cover thee with
his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall
be thy shield and buckler.” Here, the word TRUST has a different meaning
in the Hebrew language than in our English language. It is written as this: ‘חָסָה châçâh, khaw-saw';
a primitive root; to flee for protection; figuratively, to confide in:—have
hope, make refuge, (put) trust’. – Strong’s Definition for H2620. If you
look at Psalm 91 in its entirety you will see that GOD asks us to do some things
in the first 2 verses and if we do HE makes promises we can trust to be filled
for the rest of the chapter based on those things we readily agree such as trust.
Is it easy to trust in GOD? Yes and No. Mostly yes. Because we have seen the
evidence of HIS promises fulfilled; we have seen the evidence in our lives of
prayers fulfilled; we have been practical and honest with ourselves when we
looked around at the planet, the universe that surrounds us fully understanding
there is not a single thing left to chance. Daily affirmation of the wonders of
creation naturally builds trust in HIM so that we can be patient in faith that
those promises like in verse 11 “For he will give his angels a command
concerning you, To guard you in all
your ways.”
The
‘no’ it is not easy to trust GOD is in the many arrows from the unseen yet
sinister effort to compromise, to weaken, to break our trust in GOD seasoned Christians
understand as works of the devil and his minions. “Put on the whole armor of
God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” – Eph 6:11 It
is not in the 'seeming' inability for GOD to protect us that we find difficult but at
times those arrows strike deeply and wound so massively our attention may be
diverted from CHRIST who has already dealt with the many horrors that befall humans
and is the only one to intercede and heal whatever is broken. It takes time and
in that time we may find that while we are on the mend the arrow that brought
doubt infected the area it hit and while it is has been removed by CHRIST
depending on our faith it may take a little time to heal. If we have a healthy TRUST
in GOD it goes a long way in mitigating all assaults against us by the
adversary who stalks his prey. If we had trust like a little child trusts then
we could see in our minds what faithful ones of old saw, angelic protection
surrounding us – guarding us in ALL our ways.
One of the ways we gain absolute trust in
GOD is by reading the Bible. Doing prayer about what we read. Research what we
read. When we understand we are convicted and that conviction adds another
block of evidence to support our TRUST in GOD, IN CHRIST, in the HOLY SPIRIT and
obviously in THE BIBLE. Imagine how the folks felt when Christopher Columbus
sailed beyond their horizon and returned! It definitely would have given those
who could read their own Bible from the 16th century onward faith as they saw this verse
in Isa 40 “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like
grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them
out like a tent to dwell in.: -- Vs 22! The evidence the Bible was TRUSTworthy
and GOD all the more!
Please
take the time to consider who, how, why you trust and ask yourself which of
those for whom you have TRUST is more deserving of unwavering TRUST than GOD?! As
we move along in our Christian walk our faith will continue to increase and
solidify as the promises of GOD are made true in your life. If you dwell in the
secret place of the Most High you shall fall under the shadow of the Almighty.
If you say to the LORD “HE is my refuge and my fortress; My GOD, in HIM I will
trust surely HE shall deliver you from all the things listed in vs 4-16 in Psalm
91 a most comprehensive list of terrible things from which we will be delivered.
Read
and meditate on Psalm 91. Examine your trust/or trust issues and if you are so
inclined make TRUST a matter of concerted prayer and of course meditation that you
may be clear in who and why you should trust with your very life, now and eternally.
