Because you did not believe my words -- Luke 1:20

“And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.” Luke 1:20 – NIV

What do you think?

Dumbfounded [pun unintended] at the simple statement of a faith-fact as recorded in Luke 1:20. Where to begin?

What did Zechariah do to be silenced?

Back in verse 11 it is recorded that an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah.
Vs 12 says Zechariah was a little freaked.
Vs 13 says the angel tried to calm him telling him his wife would bear him a son and they would call him John.
Vs 14-17 explains the prophetic life John would lead and the purpose for his life.

The key reason for his silence:

Vs 18: Zechariah asked the angel how Zechariah could be sure? He declared that he and his wife were well along in years.
[Back story: Vs 7 states that Zechariah’s wife was unable to conceive. They had no children.]
Vs 19: The angel answers the question posed in vs 18 by identifying who he was, Gabriel; his relationship/authority for the message – he stands in the presence of GOD; and alas, his mission – sent to deliver this message of ‘good news’.

Is he deserving of such discipline? The loss of speech?

Zechariah’s Pedigree and Résumé?

Vs 5: Priest of the priestly division of Abijah
Vs 6: Righteous in the sight of GOD
Vs 8,9,10: It was his duty to burn incense and it was during that function he was contacted by Gabriel.

Knowledge of a Temple Priest

If you are familiar with the Bible, then you are aware of the Pentateuch [first five books of the Bible]; and the role of education from the family unit to the priests and the High Priest. They would all know the history/origins of their people and the various tribes that comprised the nation of the Hebrews. They would know Abraham as the patriarch of the entire Hebrew nation through the birth of his son, Isaac.
Isaac came to life as the first recorded miracle baby. He was born to Abraham and his wife Sarah. They were both a century old, childless and past childbearing age when she bore Isaac.

Consequences of knowledge:

When contacted by Gabriel with the promise of a child born to Zechariah and his infertile wife Elizabeth the reality should not have been a questionable feat. The story of Isaac’s conception was not just the stuff of a simple bedtime story for the Jewish community. It was a paramount point in mankind’s history when a covenant was made with a man through whom all of mankind would ultimately be blessed with the possibility of eternal life. So, this question: “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” should have never entered his mind. Zechariah was a member of the very nation of people GOD made a covenant with long after GOD recognized HIS promises to Abraham. Zechariah was a priest! He was responsible for burning incense on the altar of GOD! How could he not believe Gabriel? Yet, there was doubt. And for that he spent nearly a year unable to speak and then received his son John and on the day of John’s circumcision he could speak, PRAISING GOD! – Vs 64

Additionally, the presence, encounters and interactions with Angels existed through oracles and written word as penned before Zechariah was born. He should have known if they appeared with a message it would happen exactly as it was to happen. Here are just a few of those notable encounters you may remember – yet there are far more.

1.      Abraham was informed he and his wife would have a child. [Gen 18]
2.     Two angels visited Sodom to deliver Lot and his family before its destruction. [Gen 19]
3.     Moses and his thorn bush encounter. [Ex 3]
4.    The three Hebrews and the fiery Furnace. [Dan 3]

What are some of the lessons here?

1.      You are responsible for and to the knowledge you have.
2.     You are responsible to verify the knowledge you have.
3.     You should read your Bible earnestly and daily to continue to gain knowledge and to retain knowledge.
4.    You should be confident in your learned and confirmed knowledge.
5.     You should not be shocked or unfaithful to your learned and confirmed knowledge if you have prayed and verified its veracity.
6.    While Zechariah’s discipline seems extreme it is no different than a parent telling a child who continues to question authority when told to do something to ‘sit down and be quiet’ in a ‘time out’. To ‘think about their actions’.
7.     Do you believe you have been asked to do something you should have accepted in faith but did not and suffered in your faith?
8.    Finally, IF we BELIEVE, KNOW, have FAITH that GOD is almighty, all knowing, ever present, the same today as yesterday and tomorrow, is the CREATOR of all things then we are responsible for that knowledge and to respond when called in obedience and faith.

Alas, Zechariah went from uttering a faithless question to silence not able to utter another sound until the day his miracle baby was circumcised and the baby’s prophetic life began wherein Zechariah then uttered his first audible speech which was PRAISE TO GOD!

GOD was not going to have his plan thwarted by a moment of doubt in a man’s life. Zechariah’s son John fulfilled his prophetic life announcing and then baptizing Jesus the day Jesus was anointed by GOD as the Christ.

Have faith; live your faith and take GOD at his Word/WORD [contained in the Bible]/HIS Son, Jesus.]

"GOOD LUCK!"

A question for Christians: Do you understand what you say when you mindlessly utter words?
Do you believe words have meanings and consequences?
Do you believe in an ALMIGHTY GOD? A GOD who knows all and is responsive to you?
Do you believe GOD blesses your life?
Does HE know what goes on your mind, heart, life?
Do you believe HE has a purpose, moreover, a purpose for your life? Do you do your best to live within HIS Will especially in your own life?

Then, what does LUCK or CHANCE have to do with your life?

If you are a believing CHRISTIAN do you want GOD’s purpose to be realized in the lives of those with whom you intersect/interact?
Do you want their life to be filled with GOD’s purpose? HIS Will?

Then, I ask you again, what does LUCK or CHANCE have to do with it?

Are you a Christian who routinely reads your Bible? Have you contemplated the plight of those who participated in the exodus from Egypt their life and death in the desert or their progression to the location of the ‘promised land’? Have you read the Exodus account? Have you read each of the chapters in Numbers which adds detail not included in the Exodus account? Have you read Deuteronomy? It provides specific detail on relationships developed between GOD, the chosen leadership of the people out of Egypt as well as the whole of the 12 tribes plus their non-Hebrew ‘strangers’ as referred to in scripture. In particular this one:

“The agreement covenant life for obedience – death for not”

“See, I am putting before YOU today blessing and malediction: 27 the blessing, provided YOU will obey the commandments of Jehovah YOUR God  that I am commanding YOU today; 28 and the malediction,  if YOU will not obey the commandments of Jehovah YOUR God  and YOU do turn aside from the way about which I am commanding YOU today, so as to walk after other gods whom YOU have not known.” – Deuteronomy 11:26-28 [Also Deut 30:15-19]

Breaking it down

What did they have to agree to? “So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul—“ Deut 11:13 and this: “Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them.” Vs 16

Again, as a reminder, what is the topic of this post? GOOD LUCK.

Consider this scripture – Isa 65:11 -- as recorded in several versions of the Bible:
  • 1.      And ye [are] those forsaking Jehovah, Who are forgetting My holy mountain, Who are setting in array for Gad a table, And who are filling for Meni a mixture. –Young’s Literal Translation
  • 2.     But ye are they that forsake the Lord, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. – King James Version
  • 3.     But ye are they that forsake the Lord, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. – New International Version
  • 4.    But you who abandon me, your God, who forget the holy mountains, Who hold dinners for Lady Luck   and throw cocktail parties for Sir Fate,” – The Message Bible
  • 5.     “But you are among those forsaking Jehovah, Those forgetting my holy mountain, those setting a table for the god of Good Luck, And those filling up cups of mixed wine for the god of Destiny.” – The New World Translation

Notice, the overall theme regardless of the version or translation is directed to those who relied on -- or in any way venerated, acknowledged, acquiesced, gave credence too Luck, Fate, a ‘troop’ of gods, etc.  The consequence of such behavior? Their actions were tantamount to forsaking GOD.

In our culture we have many sayings that people utter not necessarily giving consideration to the ‘words’ they said or the intent of the ‘words’. For instance, ‘Oh my god’ ‘OMG’, ‘God bless you’, ‘Good Luck’, ‘Blessed be’, ‘God willing’, ‘Fate intervened’. While well intentioned, yet sometimes habitual more than thoughtful, they are words that bear with them a thoughtful or thoughtless deed or wish.  Some invoke GOD as the power source behind the deed or wish.

Consider this:

If you know what you are saying and say it with affirmation, then you are truly responsible for those words. You may want someone to truly be blessed by GOD. That is good! Or, you may sincerely wish ‘Good Luck’ to someone or believe ‘Fate’ will be with someone. Give the thoughts above some time to research and pray upon. Is wishing someone ‘good luck’ or trying to give them hope that somehow ‘fate’ will intervene really as ‘good’ or even equal to saying ‘GOD bless you’?

Then there is ‘God willing’. You may truly say ‘God willing’ as a caveat for important consideration in some situation. This too is good! It shows a deference to GOD’s place/will in your life. But to utter it as some habitual statement can have consequences you may be uncomfortable should GOD’s will be different than your plans.  Or, you may even GENUINELY wish to hail ‘Oh my GOD!’ ßthat one is actually fodder for it’s own post. There are surely times when that is most appropriate but surely not because someone texted you something that was shocking, or told you something that was scurrilous.

Wrapping it up

GOD bless you! A beneficent enough statement and is often requested from a truly charitable heart on the behalf of another. It is a powerful 3 words.

Good Luck! – As a Christian, do you really want anything in your life left to chance? Worse, do you believe anything in your life has come by chance? As asked above, do you not believe the ALMIGHTY, All Knowing, Ever Present GOD you worship as a Christian is not absolutely and intimately involved in your life? How many of us have prayed for something and when it happened said how ‘lucky’ you were? Or you heard someone say ‘You are lucky’ and did not correct them to give all credit to GOD? Chance or luck is not GOD’s way. Begin now to recall the lessons learned by those who were freed from Egypt as they witnessed firsthand, saw with their own eyes, experienced with their own bodies, their deliverance through the Red Sea with the Holy Spirit as their Vanguard and Rear guard. They had tangible and irrefutable evidence of GOD’s constant presence and activities in their lives yet they still fell back on their ‘cultural’ habits. Later, as a group they accepted the covenant with GOD to obey HIS rules and live. When they failed, they saw immediate response from GOD. There were boundaries. There was no room for giving even tacit ascent to any other god but GOD Almighty.

Remember: Words have meanings. Once uttered they also have consequences. They may be words said by millions the world over with not a single negative consequence. Yet, as a Christian, we do not obey GOD when it is convenient, when we think it is seemingly inconsequential as just saying ‘Good Luck’ or when we act as if GOD is not intimately involved in our lives. Obeying GOD has never been replaced with some other doctrine or covenant. Jesus reiterated, reinforced and ratified 2 commandments: Love GOD with you whole heart, soul, mind and your neighbor as yourself. If you love GOD wholly because you know that is the right thing, you are in effect loving your own life. If you refrain from saying things that give credit or power to Luck, Fate, or any other god than GOD Almighty why would you not correct someone who said ‘wow, you are lucky’ or ‘wow, good thing Fate was good to you’. You would kindly remind them the good that comes to you are blessings from GOD having nothing to do with some partnership between GOD Almighty and the god of good luck, or the god of fate. Hopefully, if said with kindness and love the person you are saying it to will be edified and root out these phrases from their own lives. We all make mistakes.
