Rich is multi-dimensional James 5 1-6 shows the 'bad' side

 

Theme Scripture: --James 4:17 “Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.”

Theme Scripture Chapter Five: “4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.”

“1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2  Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. 4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.”--James 5:1-6

The opening scriptures in this chapter are a continuation of what Chapter 4 presented. So, as we consider the beginning of Chapter 5, we notice the final chastisement comes to the rich, specifically the ones who employ others to tend their fields and goods. Notice, verse 1 is a behest to see the miseries about to come upon them for the reasons stated in vs 2 through 6. Notice the how and what is affected by their corruption.

• Vs 2 – Riches Corrupted/Clothes moth eaten

• Vs 3 - Their gold/silver corroded. Corrosion will be witness against/will eat flesh like fire

• Vs 4 - The fraud they engaged – Stealing wages from staff cry out/staff’s cries have reached the ears of GOD

• Vs 5 - You have lived well.

• Vs 6 - You have condemned and murdered them just without resistance!

How more poignant is this scriptural statement in the last verse of the previous chapter in James: “Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.”

Is James here condemning all who are rich? Well, it seems certain if their riches are improved on the back of the work of others with no pay of any sort then, YES! However, when one reads this and jumps to the conclusion that it is not right for a believer to be ‘rich’ materially it is a dangerous summation of the text. In fact, this text spends no small amount of effort from James, who in 6 verses spells out HOW this particular rich person was living large off the laborious efforts of his farm hands who likely worked a typical week which could have been totally 150 hours a year! Think of how they were able to take care of their families on that ANNUAL income. And, sometimes it was all done at one time annually. Likely, harvest time.

Let’s work this out and see what we learn from the conclusion of the first 6 verses of this chapter. Based on the motive of the ‘boss’ in the first 6 verses of this chapter we learn the following:

1. Riches are disposable/they corrode, decay,etc

2. Fraud can be deadly

3. What is your gain/does it match GOD’s

4. Are you a bully → vs 6

5. Based on the example in the first 6 verses “Where are your riches and where are they stored” If they are stored in your possession what should you do to change your destination? Here is a peak at your answer: ‘Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” [ Vs 7] It is only part of the answer but it is a HUGE change and in order to accomplish it successfully you need the aide of the of the next 3 verses in James 5. Theme Scripture Chapter Four: “Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”-- vs 15 

“ 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” –James 4:13-17

Notice the deliberate way verse 13 is constructed. James was trying to interject a break in the ‘routine’ of the time of person living their lives as though there is no one or nothing else to consider. In short: ‘Let’s just get up – travel to here – set up a business and make a profit.’ 

At first glance, to many, this may sound like a routine part of life, the making of plans, especially in these times when everything is in flux and not all things are as they used to be. It is tough to make a living or even plan on having a job! Those who wish to keep folks in a constant state of dis-ease create health issues – especially mentally – by taking away the ‘traditions and routines’ that have served mankind for eons.  In an attempt to control our personal lives we may see the logic in vs 13 as sound. Is this a beckoning to those who live their lives as if they are certain tomorrow will come? They plan to go and conduct business for their gain. They do it all but never interject GOD into their plans. But notice vs 14 SLAMS right into our personal rationale! “14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” 

Please consider the sage from a divinely inspired gift among men, a Pastor of robust talent and a blessing to his and succeeding generations with the wisdom and discernment he shared in his many sermons. The following is regarding vs 14. 

“Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city”—they have plenty of time, and can make a selection according to their pleasure, they can go where they like, and when they like. They see themselves with prophetic glance entering in at the city gate, and they are fully assured that they shall “continue there a year.” Of course, a year is a small matter; if they please they will stay longer. They allot themselves a lease for three, seven, fourteen, or twenty-one years, at discretion, at least they talk as if they could do so. They are going into the city to “buy and sell,” they are sure of that too. Of course they will not be laid up with sickness, they do not fear that accident or disease will keep them away from market, or hinder the active transacting of their business. No, they are going to buy and sell, and such is their confidence in their own superior abilities that they are sure to make a profit. The markets cannot fall below the price which they have fixed in their own minds, neither will they make bad debts, nor incur other losses, for they have decided that they will “get gain.” Up to now they have been self-made men, and they mean to go on making themselves, until they put the finishing stroke by adding a few more thousands. They have visions of going on to fortune.” – Sermon #1773 commentary by Pastor Charles H. Spurgeon → referencing James 4:14

As we have knowledge that we are but a ‘vapor’ appearing for a brief moment in time, should we narrow our thoughts and plans to this moment? Should we understand we are not in control of the next moment? If in fact, life takes us to a place we must make major life changes, would it not be in our momentary and longer life moments to seek GOD for HIS wisdom, guidance, PERMISSION, and protection as we consider the ‘costs’ of changing our circumstances? When we can understand the ‘just do it’ mentality is more for our own pleasure than our own good we may employ the wisdom and yes even discernment to evaluate our life’s needs from and eternal perspective – with eternity in Christ’s control. In this life we deliberate a measuring of our ‘needs’ against our ‘wants’ to be more balanced in our frailty leading to the utter and delightful dependence on GOD and HIS omniscience! 

Again, may I remind you, this book was written by James specifically to his brethren, more specifically the 12 tribes of Israel scattered about. Now, they may have been the intended target for the letter, but every Christian since that time until now must be reminded of the ‘folly’ – As Pastor Charles Spurgeon wrote in Sermon number 2242/Preached October 16, 1890 [* See note regarding #2242 below]  Pastor Spurgeon was not a whimsical pastor engaging in the ‘folly’ James writes about. He was, by all his many messages, a studied, serious and devoted Pastor. So, his words about this section of the Bible are worthy of note.

These last few verses in chapter 4 end with what has been our main theme from the beginning: “Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.” 

When you think about the verses individually you may get the import of it having been included here at this place. The 4th chapter focuses heavily on the worldly aspects, or the fleshly nature some of the Christians were engaging back when James penned this letter. He does not pull punches when calling them out on their actions. But, frankly, it is rather audacious and yes folly, to be engaged in adultery, deception, worldly interactions, and then just say ‘tomorrow we will go – relocate in essence – live to some place where they can engage in commerce and make money. Why is it audacious? Because, it shows absolutely no clue as to their responsibility towards GOD! Again, these are people who should be intimately involved with GOD yet their actions tell a different story. 

By not including GOD in their plans they fail to recognize the obvious: Not a single second yet to come is at all promised to have you alive in it. We are fully dependent on GOD for each second of life much less tomorrow or even an entire year from now. 

Is James saying Christians should not plan to relocate temporarily or permanently to make a living? No! But, Jesus said we should first sit down and count the cost of any endeavor. [Luke 14:28] James instead cautions us to include our LORD in our plans and having prayed about it as we plan be sure to acknowledge it is only done ‘if the Lord wills’. Anytime we do not pray or do not include the Lord’s will we are truly arrogant, boasting as if we control our own future. Then he ends with the grave statement that ‘if we know to do good and do not do it, it  is sin.’ 

Humbly recognizing GOD’s presence, HIS Will, HIS love and provision for us and not taking any of it for granted is imperative in our lives.

Theme Scripture Chapter Four: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”-vs 10

In our first part of discussion of Chapter 4 of James we highlighted vs 6 → “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” It is from here we will move forward. 

With honest humility we begin our discussion with vs “7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” The word 'resist' here in the Greek language is ‘to set one’s self against’, to withstand, resist, oppose – Strong’s G436 anthistēmi . The verbs used to demonstrate the power of this scripture if you look at the definition are all action words. WITHSTAND RESIST OPPOSE. Thus, in all humility, relying utterly on the Holy Spirit we are to actively deny the assault from evil through vigorous opposition. We are never to be passive in protecting our faith and love for our GOD, our Savior and Redeemer. ‘The one who was, who is, and who is to come…’ [Rev 1:8] 

James begins to outline the best way to accomplish this:  “8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.” vs 8,9 

Oh, to unpack this. For a moment, let your mind, perhaps your believing mind, meander through the imagination these words conjure. Drawing near to GOD. How do you envision GOD? We have descriptions of those who have encountered their ‘drawing near’ experience. Burning bush, a hand, the back, seated on a chariot, seated on HIS Throne and many more. So many ways and all MAJESTIC in their own experience. You no doubt have your own. Now, as you meditate upon the true frailty of a human, again, in all humility, not pride, attempting to draw near to the ALMIGHTY Creator of all things, perhaps maybe even in apprehension. Pausing…now, if us drawing close to our Maker isn’t extremely huge, what James says next just takes us right off the richter scale into another entire acquaintance-sphere…’and He will draw near to you.’ Just typing this I am very aware of the privilege of dissecting this verse. I am cautioned by GOD to remind myself and you, the point of vs 8 is cause and effect: RESIST evil/DRAW close to GOD. The effect? “...and He will draw near to you…” 

I could stop here and it would be a profound consideration of HIS Word. But, our understanding must be deepened as we further examine the self James was addressing in vs 8: “...Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” We get the cleanse your hands, we understand we are sinners. Purifying our hearts is referencing the life that is morally clean. But James shows ‘in context’ with the entire chapter so far, many of us are ‘double-minded’. Also in keeping with the idea of being ‘friends with the world’ we have ‘divided interests’ which is what is meant here with the Greek word dipsychos Strong’s G1374 – meaning two souls. Let’s step back a second and read what vs 7 and 8 says:

•  “7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. ← Action Required

• “8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. ←Cause and effect

• Cleanse your hands, you sinners; ← Action Required

•  and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” ← Motive possibly compromised

It is a push and pull effort, all action required, to not only ‘do’ something mentally, emotionally and spiritually, but all to psychologically accept that we may be compromised deeply and it requires drawing very close to GOD and being humbled enough to desire HIM to draw close to us; using HIS Holy Spirit as the double edged sword to divide out our soul and spirit to surgically remove the desires of the flesh dividing our interests. [Hebrews 4:12]  

Our direct benefit when we humbly submit: “10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”--James 4:10 In the sense of the greek used for ‘lift you up’ it ‘encourages us by the blessings of salvation’; spiritual uplifting and revival. Who wouldn’t/doesn’t want this?! 

To sum up this portion of James 4. we have learned James begins Chapter 4 with a few verses chastising those among us who seek to divide and even destroy each other in arrogant activities of lust and friendship with the world, apart from GOD. Remember, solemnly, this counsel is to the ‘brethren’ in Chapter 1 of James. By Chapter 4 James is showing us that the action we take towards our brothers is supposed to be GODLY, humble, always self examining our deeper motives and acknowledging our obvious actions especially those which may hurt others and ourselves! That the answer James gives is for US to DRAW close to GOD and then GOD will reciprocate by drawing near to us. 

Final thoughts on this pulse of scripture is the conclusion of the portion of James to this point:

“ 11 Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?”

I will leave these last words to be reviewed, prayed upon and discerned by you, the reader. They are succinct, to the point and leaves no wiggle room for the flesh.

Please consider this section of James Chapter 4 with humility and a drawing close to GOD that HE may draw close to you.

James Chapter 4 Part 1

Theme Scripture Chapter Four: “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

“God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”--James 4:6

*“Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.” – Pro 3:34

*NOTE: James quotes Proverbs 3:34 within his writing of James 4:6. We will cover this  in part 2.

People, one time, in the not so distant past, were obsessed with ‘self help’ or bettering themselves from internal monitoring. How to manage their time, how to evaluate their priorities, how to live their ‘best’ life. Even so far as to hire ‘life coaches’ as a means to that end. 

James is very direct! Notice his opening statements. An interrogation of sorts.

• “4 Where do wars and fights come from among you? 

• Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 

• 2 You lust and do not have. 

• You murder and covet and cannot obtain. 

• You fight and war. 

• Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 

• 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 

• 4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? 

• Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 

As we begin to analyze the nature of each of the assessments by James please use your ‘Christian’ mind and spirit, prayerfully, to engage in the most inspired ‘self help’ from the ‘Creator’ of us. 

“4 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?” 

Is James accusing them of actual battle/warring with one another or is he using exaggeration, hyperbole if you will, to make a point in the initial question? He does suggest there was strife, contention and quarrels by using the word ‘fights’. But later in the same verse he uses ‘war’ again and thus gives us a clue to the answer to the first question indicating the manner the person behaves as “desires for pleasure”. A meaning of the Greek for “war in your members” is ‘of passions that disquiet the soul’ according to Thayer's Greek Lexicon for STRONGS G4754.

We begin to understand how James develops a logical flow in his writings. From Chapter one which begins with self examination. Then James gives practical examples of what not to be like or do in Chapter 2. A shift happens in Chapter 3 by identifying our weapon of choice – the tongue – as a most powerful tool. He pulls no punches as he describes the fruitage of the tongue as ‘bitter and self seeking’…‘earthly, sensual and demonic’. While James does emphasizes positive behavior in chapter 3, he doesn’t leave his thoughts on ‘worldly behaviors’ there. In chapter 4 he now adds  ‘intent’ to the mix. He asks us to examine our intent. Is it not from our desires for ‘passions that disquiet the soul’? Or, warring of our ‘soul’? 

Ever an eye to detail, James leaves no question to the imagination of what he speaks. Instead, he lays out what may be various kinds of desires/or actions that may disquiet the soul. “2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war.” Notice the words, lust, murder, covet? They are all stimuli for the soul. They are often used by filmmakers to portray humanity's age-old sin nature. We see/Lust, we want/Covet, we get/Murder. King David was the quintessential example. His gaze fell upon a beautiful woman for whom lust developed. He coveted her which led to the murder of her husband by direct order. Then he made her his wife. It doesn’t always have to be murder is immediate. It can basically be destruction of a relationship, or eventual self destruction, or it can be plotting the demise of another! Let’s pause a moment here and sense the gravity of what James has written. Remember, James refers to his readers as ‘my brethren’. In fact, he also identifies his audience as the '12 tribes scattered abroad' and this may be a clue to the use of such words as lust and murder so closely adjacent to each other. The Jews had strict laws, 10 commandments, Levitical and Deuteronomical body of law. They understood exactly what the penalty for adultery, or murder was: Stoned to death. Jesus took it a step further for Christians regarding adultery: “27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Let us not forget that the tongue when used for evil can lead to murder/death. The ‘religious’ among the Jews in the time of our LORD, as HE walked among us the last 3.5 years of HIS life, practiced willful slander. When they had the choice to repent and turn around they clamored ‘CRUCIFY HIM’ instead! Would you say it was a case for ‘passions that disquieted their souls’? Depends. It seemed their souls were already lost at least those Jesus called ‘Vipers’ and ‘white washed graves’. He told them what their eventuality would be. But not before they wreaked havoc by murder and mayhem upon Jesus’ followers. [For an accounting of Jesus' views of the Pharisees read Matt 23 -- the whole chapter. But verse 33 says this: “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?"

Continuing in James 4 vs 2 “...Yet you do not have because you do not ask.” Oddly James says the reason the ‘brethren’ do not have what they so intently seek is because they do not ask! What? Obviously, he was pointing out they were behaving in a manner disconnected from GOD as they pursued their various passions. Pay attention here. From here he builds out a whole thought. → “3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” In verse 3 James explains asking and not receiving in their case was ‘amiss’ or as the Greek Lexicon translates G2560 as having a ‘bad intent’, Apparently James felt there were some who misunderstood the character and attitude of a Christian who would pursue fleshly/worldly desires thinking that if they DID PRAY (ask but did not receive) they may somehow have GOD’s blessing? James then immediately identifies such a wrong thinking Christian as an adulterer/adultress. Asking if they understood their behavior of friendship with the world would constitute ‘enmity’ with GOD. Or ‘friendship with the world’ is hatred with GOD. Is that the place any Christian would occupy? No. In fact, verse 4 clearly states this profound and earth shaking fact: “Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” Pause here. Pray. Look at your life. Is there anything we do that would be deemed pursuing relationships with the ‘world’? Ask GOD to reveal them to you that you may enjoy seasons of refreshing by repenting and changing your course. It is not like we do not all somewhat participate in the world of our own will. Entertainment, conversation using worldly language, telling jokes that show disrespect of anyone, ‘borrowing’ something from our office that is not ours and not returning it? Lying as part of our first nature when asked to make an accounting for our actions, thoughts, speech, or merely to give an opinion on a controversial topic that may have adverse consequences if we answered as a Christian. Remember we are being watched. If we live a life that our neighbors, friends, family, coworkers, fellow students do not recognize as different from their own then it is likely you are living a ‘worldly’ life. If you seem to be at odds with them on all the things above then you will be noticed as NOT being part of their world. We want NOT to be part of their world because we want to be at peace with our GOD not an enemy. We are in the world to help them see their way out, by way of Jesus’ blood.

Look over James chapter 4 verses 1 through 4. Meditate, pray, study, ask for inspiration from the Holy Spirit in you that you may be right in your walk with GOD. Our High Priest, Jesus, has atoned for our sins, once, as a propitiatory sacrifice yet HE is always ready to plead your case by HIS blood to HIS Holy Father. 

There is much here to digest. We will pick up the next few verses in the next part in about 2 weeks. As always, remember our theme scripture: James 4:17 “Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.” Do what is right.
