Are Angels Guarding YOU? -- Psa 91

Theme Scripture

Psalm 91:1-16 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

 Verse by Verse Consideration

VS 1--He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

This seems pretty simple and straightforward. We have all experienced keeping a special memory, person, place or event concealed away in our ‘heart’ to be enjoyed many times as we bring it out and relive it. The secret place of the Most High can only be HIS heart. It is referred to as a covert in some scriptures, a chamber in others and merely a secret place in others. If we are in HIS heart, that secret place, we will always be under HIS protection.

A looming shadow under which we shall abide conjures a towering bigness, one of superlative nature, that fully eclipses us. Imagine being so concealed inside the shadow of the MOST HIGH! As a visual too, when we think of something high or overshadowing it usually seems fit to ‘hide’ us within it’s shadow. So whether we are locked away in God’s heart, concealed, or we are engulfed by HIS towering shadow, or both, we are in either case in a place of protection.

VS 2--I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
This is affirmation by the Psalmist that God HIMself is our refuge -- a veritable fortress. When we think in terms of fortress it builds in us feelings of ‘security'. We confide in God. We trust HIM. Notice how the Psalmist captures God? Fortress, refuge, confidante! All these thoughts together on the same line with God, HIS seat of authority and HIS name/reputation – Jehovah -- with all its various extensions.

VS 3--Surely *he* shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, [and] from the destructive pestilence.

Here begins the litany on what we can expect. If we make HIM our refuge, our fortress our bastion of security, HE will protect us from those that would ‘hunt’ us down. From the horrors of pestilence.

VS 4--He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou find refuge: his truth is a shield and buckler.

Complete covering and shelter from all things. His wings themselves cover and surround us to keep us hidden from the elements of life that may close in on us and cause us harm or impinge our security. And as if to secure these statements as fact the Psalmist uses God’s ‘truth’ or faithfulness as a guarantee that the previous statements are credible. Of interest is the shield and buckler. The shield could be as huge as a door and cover the whole body made from strong steel or wood. Or, it could be oval in shape and be big enough to guard only the most important organs. The buckler was a smaller shield designed to protect the heart held in the one hand while fighting with the other. So in this phrase God assures us that HE can guard and protect us either as a huge all body protection or even as a small shield designed to safeguard our heart.

VS 5--Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, for the arrow that flieth by day,

Think about it, so many are ‘afraid of the dark’ and have so little peace in the dark of night. Things happen in the cover of darkness that are frightful, terrifying and even our ‘sense of security’ is daunted by the mere appearance of darkness. We are promised that even the darkness of night shall no longer be a concern of one who has sought shelter in the secret place of God. Then as if to make the point more salient HE will protect us not only from the things that go bump in the night but from the things that we do not see coming in the midst of daylight, with the swiftness of arrows. So we do not have to worry about being attacked from behind or out of the blue. God has our back, HE has our front, HE has us!

VS 6--For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

HE considers even deadly virus and bacteria that invade our bodies when we least expect it. As if by darkness the pestilence ‘walks’. We are protected from unseen things in our state of unawares.

VS 7--A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee.

The promises just keep getting better and better. We, who are concealed in the secret place of God; are protected regardless of the seemingly insurmountable odds. The promise here is clearly God’s hand is not short and in the midst of the potential for distress the one who is concealed in the secret place of God will know no harm whatsoever. They will be like the 3 Hebrew children cast into a fiery furnace stoked up hotter than usual, they will walk through it all untouched by even the ‘scent’ of malady. -Daniel 3:27

It is important to note as a side note; King David was often faced with impossible odds as his enemy advanced on his people. So it is easy to understand why God would use such terms as ‘‘10000’ will die at thy right hand or a ‘1000’ shall fall on the side.’ These numbers seemed to be historically supportable as one looks back at the Kingdom of David vs others. And today, we hear many who quote this scripture in support of an ‘only right’ religion/elitist religion philosophy. They point forward to a time when God will exercise divine justice on a world divorced from him and the fulfillment of this statement will be in the death of those who were not part of ‘God’s present day kingdom’ as interpreted privately by various religious leaders and communities. The danger comes in trying to superimpose scripture interpretation on a private level on the plain and simply straightforward WORD of God as spoken, scribed and preserved in the Holy Scriptures.

VS 8--Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the reward of the wicked.

God  will protect us especially when the reward of the wicked is doled out. The question here rises, since those that fall on the right and left are obviously not those who sought refuge in God and they are referred to as ‘wicked’ where does that put anyone who has not determined as yet who is their Savior? This entire Psalm is simply an answer to that very question.

VS 9/10-- Because *thou* hast made Jehovah, my refuge, the Most High, thy dwelling-place, 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.

The answer to the previous question. If you have made God your Savior the place where your confidence in salvation and security lives then HIS guarantee is: There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent. Remember this scripture: “ so my word that goes forth from my mouth will prove to be. It will not return to me without results, but it will certainly do that in which I have delighted, and it will have certain success in that for which I have sent it.”-Isaiah 55:11 God cannot lie. HE must abide by HIS word, edict, promise, guarantee. HE has promised and is now bound by HIS word that no evil will befall those whose dwelling place is the MOST HIGH! This promise comes with the further detail...neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent. In other words, our home is protected as well as our lives. This could mean our tent, the body, or our literal tent, the house/home. Either way is not exclusive of the other and could be assumed it would encompass both.

VS 11--For he shall give his angels charge concerning thee, to keep thee in all thy ways:
This is one of the key scriptures in this Psalm. See here HIS words: keep thee in all thy ways

This psalm sets out to cover all the possibilities by which harm can come to a person. This one promise issued forth to the angels is to keep you, or as some translations render this verse,  ‘guard’ you, in ALL your ways! ALL your ways incorporates your lifestyle, your life, your possessions, your family, ALL your WAYS! If HE gives the angels this charge to guard us in ALL our ways can we not rest completely from the stress of concern and worry. This would mean our financial ways would be guarded as well. This is a pivotal portion of this wonderful Psalm. Imagine, if you will, the freeing breath and thought that one can experience when you acquiesce your entire being to a God capable and desirous of taking complete control and responsibility for your entire safety both in the here and now and in the future! Is it possible for any human to be so free of concern, worry, stress, anxiety? There is always something nagging us even in the back of our minds that seeks to impose on our sense of security. Illness, death, financial collapse, violent crime, war, loss of friends and family members prematurely. But God is here instructing HIS servants, the angels, to ‘guard us in ALL our ways!’.

VS 12--They shall bear thee up in [their] hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

What a tender and loving God! The confidence we can have in these angels directed to watch over us even to keeping us from slipping and falling by accident, from stubbing our toe. From tripping over something. When we fully trust in this protection we are keen to those times when the inevitability would have been disastrous had the angels not interceded in balancing us, in sidestepping a potential harmful situation, in steadying you when you were not able to stabilize yourself. [Of course, this scripture is obviously as metaphorical as the whole of this Psalm. We will also be reliant on God to keep us from slipping and falling in our Spiritual life as well.] How many times did your foot slip and you should have fallen, gravity is effective, but for some strange reason you were able to gather your composure and you did not fall. This was not you gathering your composure. This was you being lifted by the angel’s hands lest you fall. Did you whisper a quick thank you to God for HIS loving oversight? Thank HIM for the angels being conscientious about their work? We are mindful of the statement of fact in Romans 8:38,39 that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ.

VS 13--Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder; the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under foot.

Even in an unexpected encounter with wild animals or dangerous reptiles we will be protected. We will find safekeeping in the secret place of God even when faced with both the literal wild kingdom as well as those persons who have wild [beastly] ways and seek to cause us harm.

VS 14--Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

So little is asked of us. We only have to ‘love’ God and ‘know’ HIS name and we shall be delivered! Is it a single ‘name’[[1]] we must know or is it the complete character and reputation of the MOST HIGH God, known as many names in the Old Testament, that we must know? Shouldn’t we be so utterly convinced of HIS ability to become everything we need when we need it? Is that not what HE told Moses with this expression:”And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”--Ex 3:13-14

When we call on HIM it is with absolute trust in HIS having proven over and over again that HE would prove to be everything we could ever need or want in every situation!

VS 15--He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. 16 With length of days will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

What a grand conclusion. After 14 verses of promises that nothing we know as ‘bad’ or ‘evil’ will touch us if we find our refuge in HIS secret place, he concludes the promises with going the extra mile with us...if we call on HIM HE WILL answer! HE will be there should we find ourselves in the midst of trouble. He will not only DELIVER us but will HONOR us! Imagine, God honoring US! He promises that we will live a long life and show us salvation. What more can one possibly ask then to feel this faultless sense of security all for loving HIM and having FAITH in HIM, HIS name, HIS ability to deliver us into HIS promises.

Final Thoughts:

We won’t live an accident or malady proof life. We may still fall, we may still contract some disorder that requires faith to overcome [thus seeking HIM as a place of refuge] and we may still have challenges to our faith. However, in all that does come our way, if our first inclination is to respond in prayer in faith that GOD has our right hand and we shall not fear HE will help us getting to the place of peace knowing HE has given HIS angels the task of guarding us in all our ways will be ours.

“For I am the Lord your God
who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you.” Isa 41:13

Fellowship with Darkness -- Eph 5:6-11

Theme Scripture

“Let no man deceive you with empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore, do not be sharers with them; 8 for you were once darkness, but you are now light in connection with the Lord.  Go on walking as children of light,9 for the fruitage of the light consists of every sort of goodness and righteousness and truth.  10 Keep on making sure of what is acceptable to the Lord; 11 and stop sharing in the unfruitful works that belong to the darkness; rather, expose them for what they are.” -- Eph 5:6-11  [NWT]

“6 Let no one deceive you with vain words, for because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the sons of the disobedience, 7 become not, then, partakers with them, 8 for ye were once darkness, and now light in the Lord; as children of light walk ye, 9 for the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth, 10 proving what is well-pleasing to the Lord, 11 and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of the darkness and rather even convict,” – Eph 5:6-11 [YLT]

Additional Scripture

“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” – James 1:27 [KJV]

“The form of worship [or religion] that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.”

Practical analysis

It seems we sometimes get caught up in what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ on the part of another who is a celebrity or who is politically notorious. But, as Christians we are to live our lives according to the Word of GOD and based completely in HIS laws. The brother of Jesus, whose name was James, penned the words in the book named after himself as quoted above and articulated that our lives should not be somehow blemished by how the world sees things. In fact, Paul, who wrote Ephesians, says it even stronger when he said we should have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. What are some of those works? Serial behavior that is considered outside GOD’s law like idolatry, lying, stealing, murdering, adultery, drunkenness, greed, extortion, etc. (See 1 Cor 6: 9-11)

Interestingly, for many decades politicians have been known for being liars. Does that mean every one of them is a liar? Who knows. Unless you personally know the person and over time have come to believe they live an exemplary life then you cannot really know. However, if they publicly make a statement that can be proven false then you know they are not the example a Christian would want to emulate. If they participate in serial lying as a means of life then in fact you are warned to have no fellowship with them because they are in darkness.

When Christians begin to compare one person in darkness against another who is also in darkness [for instance, both have publicly lied multiple times] and somehow rationalize that the one has moral fitness in abundance when compared to the other the Christian actually presents a case of two individuals who share the darkness because both have been publicly caught lying. GOD does not abide in darkness and Christians have no place making judgment of which representative of darkness is better than another. In fact, it is not a conversation Christians should be involved in because darkness is the enemy of LIGHT. Our concern is twofold: 1] Remember our worship/religion is to be PURE and UNDEFILED and without spot from the world. 2] We should be the light in the darkness exposing the works of darkness and if possible share the LIGHT with the individual, so they may see the WAY to LIFE through the originator of our faith, Jesus.

While we may not ‘judge’ another as in saying their s0ul is dead or destined to be forever alienated from GOD, we must use judgment based on GOD’s righteous principles to recognize darkness, so we may remain free of its influence. We all sin, daily, with or without intent and are in need of forgiveness. We cannot judge the progress of one who is making an attempt to move from a sinful state of life to one fully transformed by the Holy Spirit. [Rom 12:2] Christians mature at an individual rate in their walk so we walk with them with compassion and encourage them to maintain their course encouraging them to not fall back into life threatening behaviors. For those bent against the Christ and who continue in darkness we can only be the ‘light’ that may attract them to life by living a LIGHTED life --- not participating in their darkness and surely not emulating one representative of darkness over another as if one is ‘morally fit’ and the other not so much.

Final Thoughts:

As a reminder, these closing words are recorded by John, Jesus’ apostle of love, near the end of Revelation: “13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” – Rev 22:12-15 [KJV]

Who Controls YOUR Life? --- Gal 5:23

Theme Scripture

“But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law.”—Galatians 5:22-23  [NLT]

 Additional Scripture

“5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience GODliness; 7 And to GODliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 2Pet 15-8 [KJV]

“5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to GOD’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with GODliness, 7 and GODliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [NLT]

Thoughts:

Contemplating Temperance; trying to understand its nuances and how it fits with today’s Christian walk. The diagram above reflects the two branches of temperance; Gentleness and Sobriety. As we explore the two branches may we come to understand the blessed benefits of temperance!

First: Gentleness has this sense:

1) moral goodness, integrity
2) benignity, kindness
Does it not soothe your spirit merely to read the words: ‘moral goodness, integrity, kindness’? How can it not. In a world where the opposite is more often our experience to consider just the words could soothe us says much. Yet, imagine if YOU were the embodiment of ‘moral goodness, integrity and kindness’? How would you affect the world around you?

For those of us raised in the 50’s, 60’s and 70's, we watched as images were promoted on the television that reflected what was believed to be examples of ‘moral goodness’ and ‘integrity’ and ‘kindness’. Who could forget Lassie and Timmy’s family? Who could forget the Walton’s and their intergenerational family dealing with the transitional mores as ‘moral goodness and integrity’ served as the guiding light to which they arrived during each conflict. As the years progressed the images we watched began lamenting  that ‘moral goodness and integrity’ had disappeared and was usually reckoned to ‘hard working’ ‘honest’ individuals as ‘good people’ who ‘work hard’ -- as if they were a species of human that was being migrated from the everyday prevalent norm to the endangered list. And now, today, they are referred to as ‘in the day’ or questioned as to ‘why they struggled so hard for their beliefs?’ These same individuals are moved now from the endangered list to the ‘near extinct’ list.

Yet, when we see examples of ‘moral goodness’ and ‘integrity’ we are heartened that such individuals still remain --- in this day and age as a reminder that we are not all lost. Their presence may be a faded light, but we could follow it on our path back to ‘right’.

Where is gentleness today? Is there a place in our busy competitive lives for gentleness? Does it seem refreshing to you? This brings us to the second branch of Temperance: Sobriety

Second: Sobriety has this sense:

What is Sobriety? We have heard it often as it relates to those who have successfully engaged in a 12-step program. Sobriety is something protected moment to moment and with cherish. Some synonyms for sobriety are: abstaining, moderation, refraining, self-restraint, and soberness.

The one branch, ‘gentleness’, seems to have no limit! In fact, the more one exhibits moral goodness, integrity and kindness the more endearing the person becomes. The other branch, sobriety, requires ‘self-restraint, abstinence, and moderation’. Is gentleness and sobriety mutually exclusive? Are they interdependent? Remember, we are speaking of the ‘Fruitage of GOD’s Holy Spirit’ not some ‘self-effort’. Recall, the preceding verses  [Galatians 5:19-20] clearly identify if left to our own devices, the flesh, we would do all things to our own detriment; which case has clearly been evinced in the world around us.

Moral goodness, integrity, kindness, sobriety EQUALS Temperance, a FRUITAGE of HOLY SPIRIT. Consider the bottom portion of the graphic above, we see Self Control is the embodiment of temperance.

Many in today’s world fully understand there is no ‘fleshly’ or ‘natural’ inclination towards self-control. But are we lost?

Who has not heard the Serenity Prayer?
GOD grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”
The opening verses reflect a dependence on GOD and WISDOM to face or tackle the daily issues. Prayer! It is the first step to counter our ‘natural’ inclination. The Fruitage of Holy Spirit will remind us we cannot go it alone, we must depend on GOD and the way we do that is by engaging GOD in our daily lives, moment by moment. Only GOD can grant you the Peace [serenity] that comes from identifying what your limitations are and to act accordingly --- in other words --- fix what you can, understand there are some things you cannot and of course reliance on GOD to assist you in identifying the difference between the two.

As we ponder this fruitage -- ‘temperance/self-control’ which also includes two other fruitages, gentleness and kindness -- might we reflect upon our own level of moral goodness, our own integrity our own level of kindness.

Contemplate:

When was the last time you were really struck with the level of someone else’s integrity, moral goodness and kindness? Did it cause you to reflect upon your own? It is good to pray for GOD to imbue us with HIS HOLY SPIRIT and if we seek TEMPERANCE to pray through petition and supplication for our spirit to be refreshed with this important fruitage.
May GOD lift you and bring you the peace the surpasses all thought! --Phil 4:4-7

Deep Dive into Self Examination -- James 1:25

Theme Scripture

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 [KJV]

“The form of worship that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.” – [NWT]

Additional Scripture

“10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.” – Acts 17:10-12 [KJV]

“10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.” [NIV]

“19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” – James 1:19-25 [NIV]

The point of these three scriptures, or at least the intended point, is to zero into the personal responsibilities of the Christian in their acceptance of the many spiritual benefits provided by The Father and the Son upon ‘belief’ in the primacy of Jesus, the Christ and the gospel message. Once this occurs (“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1,2)) the Christian then is ready to drill down and begin the life time commitment and process of spiritual self-examination.

Initially, you are in receive mode, hearing the Word by way of the Holy Spirit as the Holy Spirit works the renewal of your mind. Learning, God’s Will, God’s Word, God’s Purpose ---perhaps even HIS purpose for you. Then, as you mature beyond the initial state you will move to mature food becoming far more comfortable with your convicted heart in Jesus, a more detailed self-examination naturally follows. However, sometimes, what is exposed is uncomfortable and we ‘naturally’, as opposed to ‘supernaturally’, rebuff the nudging our examination is giving us. We are admonished by the humility of King David because, though he made mistakes, committed sin, he would be convicted in his heart and mind and humble himself before his God. He repeatedly pled for God to search his heart and thoughts. For instance, King David wrote here: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psa 139:23,24) and here: “Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;” (Psa 26:2) and here: “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” (Psa 143:10). Notice, the common thread, ‘Search, See, Test’ and then ‘lead me’. Notice who leads? God’s Spirit.

There may be things you have done, practiced, held dear, thought or upheld traditionally that the Spirit may now be causing you to examine. These things may not have been on your Christian radar before but through your maturing the Holy Spirit is bringing them to your attention and now you may ill at ease with the exposure. What to do? Research the issue/topic and after thorough and humble prayer allow the Holy Spirit to ‘teach’ you. You may have to do a deep dive into the Bible, cultural attachment and their origins, historical data related to the topic and ultimately, through prayer and meditation you may need to speak with someone you feel comfortable has a longer association with the Lord and may have spiritual insights they can share which will help you in your self-examination process on the topic/or practice.

Going back to the theme scripture, we are instructed to pay attention that our ‘worship’ of GOD is ‘pure/clean’ and ‘undefiled’. This may seem a redundancy ‘pure and undefiled’ and you would be right. ‘Pure’ here means ‘blameless and innocent’. ‘Undefiled’ means pure from sin. Do you know this? “Therefore, if one knows how to do what is right and yet does not do it, it is a sin for him.” (James 4:17) It may be a tough reality to abide at any time in our Christian walk or maturing process but once we have determined that a thought or practice or cultural behavior is wrong, and we do not begin to correct ourselves accordingly then we fall into the sin of know what is right and not doing it. It may even be a Christian practice or cultural custom.

Here is a recent example of one of those Christian practices and cultural customs the writer has spent no small time in investigating and prayer. Easter. Yes, a holy time to be sure. A major Christian custom. Yet, what is the day in reality and how is a Christian to observe it? Ostensibly, it is the celebration of the Lord’s rising from the death/Resurrection. You may have wondered, what if anything does the ‘Easter’ celebration with the dominance of Bunny rabbits and eggs have to do with Jesus’ resurrection from death? Yes, what indeed? The ‘custom’ of Easter seems to precede Christianity. It seems, according to some, to be traceable back to an early time of humankind. Of course, we each must research, pray, meditate and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. We must not rationalize the topic as less objectionable in any decision regardless of the topic because we are called to the ONLY TRUTH, Jesus, HE is “the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” --- John 14:6 [KJV]

Here are a couple of links you may or may not find worth your time on just the topic of Easter.

Lastly, we must be mindful of this first and foremost commandment: “And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:1-3

Many consider this literally to mean ‘gods’ as in mystical or supernatural form – and they are those --- but anytime we are tied to any ‘thing’ that is not ‘pure and undefiled’ ‘without spot from the world’ and continue to promote that ‘thing’ we are putting that thing before GOD because HE has spoken NO OTHER god before HIM. Idolatry is an unpleasant word for many. Yet historically idols have come in many fashions. Today we hear the term ‘demagogue’ a lot. But can we put patriotism, culturally held beliefs, people we support, love or hate, things animate or inanimate before GOD? YES, YES, and YES again. Patriotism is an emotion and serves to rally like minded people to support their ‘idea’ of rule of law, their law enforcers be they military or civil, and to stand up for what is right. But, have we not noticed that sometimes patriotism winds up becoming a blinding agent that distracts from one’s adherence to GOD’s righteous laws? It is okay to be loyal to your community large and small. Loyal to your rule of law with a balance that subjects all things to GOD’s righteous principles. It is a very fine line for most of us. We can cross it unintentionally but a nudge from the Holy Spirit brings us back to right again, so long as we are mindful of the voice of the Holy Spirit as spoken through our conscience we will have balance.

The basic take away from these words is to be humble, let GOD lead, pray for GOD to search your spirit and soul to test you in your being and to lead you to do what comprises the ‘worship that is ‘pure and undefiled from the standpoint of our GOD and FATHER’ and to ‘remain without spot from the world’. Remember, if after you have done your due diligence in prayer, research and meditation, you have determined what is ‘right’ to the point of ‘knowing it is right’ and you do not do it then you may no longer be undefiled. ß That is a sobering thought. It is one the writer struggles with daily as items filter up into my conscience as possibly troublesome.

The reward we receive, whether or not it is our motivation, is one that only GOD grants and has the power to deliver. It will include answers, among the many other impossibly attractive benefits of faith in JESUS as our SAVIOR.

Cultural Disruption -- Do you know why?

This is the why:

Theme Scripture

“1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”  -- 2Tim 3:1-5 [NLT]

“14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” – James 3:14-16 [NIV]

Have you stopped watching the cable news? Local news? Reading newspapers? Listening to so called pundits on all things cultural here in the United States? Do you feel the ‘news’ of the day is no longer bearable? Do you feel your world is on a spiral downward and most things are upside down with what was good now labeled bad and what was bad now labeled good? Perhaps, down deep inside, you recall a Judgment against the people of GOD back in Isaiah’s day – something you could read today and see it’s timelessness. Perhaps the following prophecy is bouncing around in your background program pinging your conscience keeping you alert to the danger of the counter cultural movement of today.

This is the why:

“20 Woe to those who say that good is bad and bad is good, Those who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, Those who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” – Isa 5:20 [NWT]
One inspired man, Matthew Henry, lived from the latter part of the 17th century to the early part of the 18th century. He was a minister and an author. His commentary is comprehensive and focused on the cohesive message of the Holy Bible in toto. The following excerpt is his commentary on Isaiah 5:20.
“Who confound and overthrow the distinctions between moral good and evil, who call evil good and moral evil (v. 20), who not only live in the omission of that which is good, but condemn it, argue against it, and, because they will not practice it themselves, run it down in others, and fasten invidious epithets upon it-not only do that which is evil, but justify it, and applaud it, and recommend it to others as safe and good.” -- Matthew Henry: Commentary on Isaiah 5

If you have not looked over or read Isaiah 5 in a long while perhaps doing so would be most edifying. You may find GODly peace and long suffering in reading the denunciation of the culture at that time. Because Christians have the blessing of Christ’s exemplary life from the same Holy Bible, we can pray for the wisdom to understand what is going on and even practice what Jesus repeatedly suggested ‘Do not Fear!’ This should prevent Christians from experiencing depression, an inconsolable spirit, a weakened in faith, or even a physical response to the fear of what is happening in the world around us.

The opposite response to the mostly unspeakable things we see is to ‘rejoice for our deliverance is near’. Thus, we can help those who are frozen in fear of what their children or grand children will be living through in a corrupted society. We can teach it is better understand history and what is fair warning from GOD’s Word. ß That is where Christians find joy [Rejoice] because reading words penned millennia ago actually showing relative application in 3-dimensional living today is miraculous. It is as if we can look at the many prophetic statements from both the Old and New Testaments laying flat on the page rise as if 3D seeing your world being described by the likes of an ancient prophet or one of the Apostles of Jesus.

This is the why:

There is nothing new under the Sun.

We have yet another cultural disruption in the same generation’s lifetime [those born to the change in the ‘60’s and now today] will remember historically how their parents and grandparents felt for those fugacious years. By the 1980’s the culture had settled down once again and sort of on the same page.

This is the why:

We are in the next ‘season’  [remember for everything there is a season] of the same type of cultural disruption. The difference is that we are now a few years closer to what was called ‘the last days’ by Paul, the Apostle, so we will see these issues in a more raw form with a more distinctive watermark of the evil responsible for the breakdown of society.

To recap:
·        When you see these things understand they must happen. Our response is to ‘Stay Awake’ ‘Stand Firm’ ‘Do not fear!’ Why?

This is the why:

·        Because our deliverance is getting near.

This is the why:

·        By fully grasping the ebb and flow of history together with a clear knowledge of promises and prophecies we are in the perfect place to help those who are being adversely affected by today’s cultural disruption. Perhaps they were born in the ‘80’s and did not have the life experience of living in the ‘60’s so we must let them know we have been here and down this before and it prepares us each time to understand and react to it when we see it again. Then we can introduce our source for the PEACE that surpasses all things, GODly PEACE. We can show them the source of our Joy. In other words, we share the GOSPEL message with them because when it all boils down, and it will, being saved by the Grace of GOD through HIS Son’s death and resurrection will make the tough witness of today’s blasphemy and evil dominance bearable and in fact will further convict the soul and spirit of every believer that GOD’s WORD/Word is ALIVE!

Christians and Politics – a matter of Conscience?

 Theme Scripture

“1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” – Romans 13:1-7 [NIV]

There is little dissent that we are living in a time when governments the world over are in a state of flux and the subjects or citizens of those governments are beginning to rise and be heard. Some will be active in politics doing analysis, working to secure their ideal candidate for some office, protesting some election or policy, or actively engaging in disruption through anarchistic tactics. Elsewhere, the reign of the government is dictatorial, sometimes harsh, and the governed can do nothings but submit. There are still places where national equanimity seems to be the public perception, like Japan, some Scandinavian countries and smaller isle nations.

In all of this, Christians find themselves the world over under the counsel from Romans above. There is no exception to the opening statement of Romans 13. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”

How does the individual Christian then live the first two verses and reconcile verse 7? For instance, a Christian is called to subject themselves to the governing authority but what if they disagree with the person who is the highest position of that authority? How do they subject themselves and give respect and honor? Let’s take the recent events since Nov 9, 2016, the presidential elections here in the United States. Clearly, a much-divided campaign through the primaries from both political parties; though to be honest the one party with 17 candidates was initially more volatile than the other; but, the other is now well known to have purchased the allegiances to name a specific nominee to the general election. In both cases, the overall vehemence shown towards the parties from the among themselves was truly characteristic of the individual voter and citizen. What followed the election on 2016 will be held in the annals of history for some time to come. But, you, the reader, if you are a Christian, how did you personally reconcile your own comportment when faced with the election results? How have you been a light unto the world in the first year?

To a certain extent, rebellion seems to be an inherent trait or characteristic of humankind since Eve talked Adam into going against his own conscience back in the Garden of Eden. Sometimes, rebelling against something is required by GOD, in fact, the first Christians who took the lead in preaching the gospel rebelled against their own leadership and faced consequences but refused to cease and desist in their preaching of Christ and his resurrection. Other times, rebellion has not worked out well for those who were called to be GOD’s people. We only have to look at the punitive 40 years exile in the wilderness because of the rebellion of some of the generation who escaped Egypt through the miraculous parting of the Red Sea. GOD’s punishment to the whole of HIS people was that they would not be delivered to the Promised Land until every last person from that generation had literally died! There are many instances of rebellion that are counterintuitive.

But, today, how do we rebel in the issues of our own government today while still maintaining a clean conscience regarding Romans 13? And to the point of this article, as a Christian are we obliged to react in any way even to rebel? When strong minded individuals pressure with comments like ‘it is your civic duty’ how does the Christian respond?
There are those among the body of Christ who remain disconnected altogether from the ‘political’ process while others are on the other extreme, so fully engaged it consumes their mental, emotional, physical and strategic beings even to questionable language, actions, causes that could and does ‘stumble’ those looking on from within and without the Christian community. As Christians we include such statements from scripture like Micah 6:8 “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” [KJV] as example of how we should act.

Some translations use the word ‘lowly’ others ‘prudent’ and others ‘modest’ where ‘humbly’ is used in Micah in the King James.

For the Christian we have a few scriptures in the New Testament that call us to behave in a humble, prudent, modest and lowly way. For instance, Phil 4:8. [For a complete discussion of Phil 4:8 please see the series posted here from February 2017 http://lightwritingmatters.blogspot.com/2017/02/draw-close-to-god-part-one.html ]

We are privileged to live in a country whose founding documents were not willy-nilly thrown together but were crafted from the sage of men who’d been witness to the circumstances foisted upon the citizens of the King of England in the New World that later became the freed United States of America. They lived under the unnecessary burden of a monarchy removed by an entire ocean from the seat of the government. They also had intimate knowledge of the conditions people lived who were subject to other kinds of governments. The founders wanted the freedom they knew was self-evident FREEDOM. In its nascent form this longing and passion for freedom was culturally understood by the first citizens of the new nation. In the ensuing years, this concept of FREEDOM was challenged many times over and even as recently as the last century in this country additional amendments of the Constitution had to be made law with the focal point being FREEDOM DUE EVERY citizen reflecting equal protection and rights.

To sum up this article, as a citizen, but more importantly a Christian citizen, what is our obligation [the one thing that shines and causes anyone who observes us to recognize we live our faith in all things] when something happens within the government which does not set well with us? Do we protest? If we protest -- and protest is legal in this country, in fact, the 1st amendment provides the right to peaceable assembly and to petition the government for redress of grievances -- do we protest with anger and assault with words or instruments causing injury or death? Peaceable assembly was specifically used in the constitution. Peaceable assembly is an option for Christians who feel they should be involved civically.

Do we opine publicly, or among friends and family in such a way as to both subvert the government or our Christian responsibilities? Paul used this line of reasoning when those in his day objected to his attitude towards ‘heathens’ as to what they ate and did not eat. But, it was a huge discussion between the free Christian and the converted Christian from the Jewish faith. It was in fact tantamount to a subverting of the governing religious body in Jerusalem. His statement in 1 Corinthians the 10th chapter was a large discussion on this but please consider his attitude when push came to shove.
““I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” Vs 23,24
“If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—” Vs 27-32

Notice, Paul acknowledges that his right is his own to exercise whether it sits well with others or not asking the question why his freedom should be judged by another’s conscience – yet he quickly acknowledges we do all things to GOD but should not cause anyone to stumble, no matter who.
How does this compare with our attitude toward political discord? Easily, just because we have the right to do as our conscience dictates it may not be beneficial to anyone but one’s self and our obligation to GOD is to not stumble someone else because of our liberty/freedom in CHRIST. If our actions or reputation are considered out of nature with compassionate Christianity, then for the sake of all, including the ‘church of GOD’, we should refrain.

Where respect is due, give respect. Where honor is due, give honor. Ultimately, GOD is due absolute respect and honor and our actions should reflect our Christian reverence to GOD, first and foremost
